-Moshe Feldenkrais

Ilana Nachoum has been a Feldenkrais teacher and physical therapist for more than 30 years. Ilana is a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner® (GCFP), trained with Anat Baniel, Registered and Licensed Physical Therapist, Core specialist in training Masgutova Method for Neuro Sensory Motor Reflex Integration (MNRI), and is trained in the Hakomi method and Biofield Tuning, a form of sound healing. She integrates Somatic-Attachment-Shamanic therapy, based on Hakomi, AEDP, Sound Healing, and Meditation.

As a wise, experienced, and creative therapist, Ilana works with a wide variety of patients in the San Francisco Bay Area. Each patient is unique and receives progressive sessions. Many patients who have exhausted other options to find pain relief are able to gain awareness and empowerment to enjoy their long forgotten physical abilities.

In the mid1980s, Ilana’s debilitating back pain inspired her to discover the versatile uses of Foam rollers as an exercise apparatus. Ilana’s international seminars and instructional videos on the application of the Foam rollers to rehabilitation, educated over a thousand movement therapists and helped thousands of people to ease their pain and improve their posture. Ilana has been a guest instructor at Rancho La Puerta, Mx. since 1995, and in private practice in Marin County.

When Ilana isn’t working with her clients she is a devoted student of the art of being human, while traveling, hiking, dancing,  and playing with children.

Not only did I gain more function with my arm, I also learned to hear when my body talks to me.

Dear new client,

I am so delighted to welcome you to my practice. I see my work as a sustaining healing art; I am an artist of the whole body and our work together is an art project.

On the journey to reclaim your birth right to move with ease we will focus on your:

  • Functional ability rather than your structural pathology
  • Intelligent and integrative muscle work rather than isolated muscles weakness or strength.

I specialize in mysterious and unresolved issues related to surgery, trauma or illness, assisting in recovery and prevention of further impact.

In the sessions we MAY travel on the physical, emotional and spiritual level…

At times you may feel hopeful and engaged, other times you might notice confusion and uncertainty.  The way to reclaim yourself is a winding and sometimes challenging road; I will support you to stay on your path.

I will address any element that might be in the way to get there.

What to Expect

Each session will be passive or active depending upon your underlying needs.

Passive: You are on a treatment table fully dressed (please, wear loose, soft fabric clothing). With my hands I will move you passively and help you to experience your body from the inside out.

Active: I will direct you verbally for simple and mindful movements that will bring awareness and ease of function. I will teach you how to function efficiently and remind you to use mind and body as they were intended.

Working with Ilana regularly brought me to a place that is better than I was before my accident. -AW, age 50, writer 2 years after car accident

As Ilana addressed my incontinence, I could play tennis and hike without the familiar stiffness and pain in my hips.

Thank you for assisting me to be more functional and independent these last 3 months. I had been working with Doctors, Chiropractors and Physical Therapists for over a year in dealing with a pinched nerve in my back. I had tests, injections, epidurals, manipulations, etc., and my condition was still deteriorating. I was at the point where, if I sat down for more than 15 minutes, I would have to lie down for the rest of the day or take the risk of falling down. From my first visit with you, my back has been more stable and the incidence of pain and the intensity of the pain have decreased. I am now working consciously with my body and applying “neurological diplomacy” with the area of discomfort. This concept and practice really works! You have a direct, friendly and professional approach that comes only with experience and the results with me are proof of this. – Tim Driscoll, age 70, low back pain with sciatica

I feel HOPEFUL after my first session with Ilana, I was actually able to do things I had never done before. Before this session I had no access to the movement, now after this work I can mentally access the movement. I feel empowered and like I have come out of the dark -KS, age 45, persistant frozen shoulder

I found Ilana very knowledgeable, conscientious, empathic, and intuitive…. I have referred several of my patients to her, who have, likewise, greatly benefitted from her skill, knowledge, and usefulness. Mark Swoiskin, MD

Before I met Ilana, I was jumping from appointment to appointment, looking for the right doctor/therapist with the right treatment or protocol for me. I spent over a year trying out new methods of treatment: acupuncture, cranial chiropractic work, different types of massages, physical therapy, aquatic physical therapy, …Ilana deals with the body in a wholesome way that has given me a new understanding of holistic medicine... now that I look back at the first weeks to months of working with ilana, I am astonished by my progress ..…Ilana makes sure not to force you through anything. Instead, you learn to work with (and not against, as I cannot more strongly urge) your body toward a place of healing.
SB, age 17, Lyme disease

I am a Pilates instructor and i used to wake up each  morning with sever pain, ilana helped me to changes the way i move and my morning are pain free. Judi, age 50,  Pilates instructor

the gift of brain plasticity, a mindful movement journey through pain

Being with pain has the price tag of avoiding movement and therefore tremendously reduces the quality of life.  The fear of pain becomes the silent inner motivator that subconsciously creates limiting habits.  The limiting habits reduce the potential full functional of motion and can be the very cause of the ongoing chronic pain.  This is the way brain functions, yet, with mindful intervention there is a way out to find a pain free life.

Ease in your daily movement is essential for personal, social and economical wellbeing.  Together we will learn how to find alternative ways to move beyond the limiting habitual patterns.  All of this happens as we experience subtle movement m-i-n-d-f-u-l-l-y.

In this workshop we will work towards reclaiming ease in motion, as we arouse the curious nature of our inner scientist/detective to acknowledge the impact of the fear of pain. Our limiting habits will become obvious. As we listen to our inner dialog while we move, we will create and cultivating a new supportive and encouraging inner guide.

•    Lengthen the muscles and enjoy ease in your improved posture
•    Relax your constantly overworking muscles.

WORKSHOP 4: Freeing the Hips and Lifting the Veil of the Pelvis

The Gateway to Finding the Groove For Sensual Pleasure

Sensual pleasure is unlimited and has a very wide range of expression, yet, it requires freedom and intelligent integrity of all it’s parts (joints, bones, soft tissues, energetic flow). The ability to be present in the pelvic region has been compromised by social and personal emotional and physical trauma.  The impact of these experiences can be altered with m-i-n-d-f-u-l intentional movements which can be the key factor to removing the veil. Freedom of the pelvic motion has a rippling effect on the entire body as it is the central hub of connection.

In this workshop we will experience the essential planes of motion as we become intimate with the 3D anatomy of the region. We will explore connection between these planes and notice it’s ripple effect on the spine, rib cage and limbs. We will improve our ability to move with subtle intention and attention, which yields a new level of freedom. As we refine our quality of our movement, we will benefit with an expanded sense of sensual pleasure.

The Feldenkrais Method® is a form of somatic education that uses gentle movement and directed attention to improve movement and enhance human functioning. Through this Method, you can increase your ease and range of motion, improve your flexibility and coordination, and rediscover your innate capacity for graceful, efficient movement. These improvements will often generalize to enhance functioning in other aspects of your life. The Feldenkrais Method is based on principles of physics, biomechanics and an empirical understanding of learning and human development. By expanding the self-image through movement sequences that bring attention to the parts of the self that are out of awareness, the Method enables you to include more of yourself in your functioning movements. Students become more aware of their habitual neuromuscular patterns and rigidities and expand options for new ways of moving. By increasing sensitivity the Feldenkrais Method assists you to live your life more fully, efficiently and comfortably.

The aim of the Feldenkrais Method is a person that is organized to move with minimum effort and maximum efficiency, not through muscular strength, but through increased consciousness of how movement works.
 – Moshe Feldenkrais, PhD

I believe that the unity of mind and body is an objective reality. They are not just parts somehow related to each other, but an inseparable whole while functioning. A brain without a body could not think.
